Takacat Launches the Revolutionary T220UL Ultralight Inflatable Catamaran

Over the years, the Auckland On Water Boat Show has developed a reputation as a hub for the new releases and innovations of the marine industry this year. As the show approaches, we’ll be highlighting the best-in-show products you can expect to see this year, and the latest and greatest from our exhibitors.

January 16, 2026 By

Takacat, the innovative New Zealand-based designer and manufacturer of premium catamaran inflatable boats, is thrilled to announce the release of the Takacat T220UL Ultralight, a game-changing addition to its lineup that sets a new benchmark for portability and performance in the compact tender and dinghy segment.

Weighing just 14 kg (with select configurations approaching as low as 11 kg as seen in early previews), the T220UL stands as one of the lightest 2.2m inflatable boats on the market today. This ultra-portable catamaran measures 2.2 m in length overall with a 1.4 m beam and packs down into a compact breathable backpack sized at only H 0.86 m x W 0.5 m x D 0.3 m. Built from robust SIJIATEX 0.7mm PVC (with an optional TPU material upgrade), it features thermo-welded seams, pressure relief valves, and a pioneering inflatable transom complete with a quick-clip outboard mounting bracket rated for electric motors up to 2 hp / 10 kg.

The T220UL’s distinctive catamaran hull delivers outstanding stability and hydrodynamic efficiency, allowing effortless rowing for up to two passengers and providing a dependable platform for shore transfers from larger trailer boats, smaller powerboats, or sailing yachts. Its compact, backpack-friendly design also makes it an excellent choice for tradespeople and service professionals requiring a lightweight, easily transported vessel to reach municipal water storage areas, lakes, and dams.

“The T220UL is a true breakthrough in lightweight inflatable technology,” said a Takacat spokesperson. “It marries our proven catamaran stability with unmatched portability, giving boat owners, adventurers, and working professionals the freedom to enjoy or access the water without the hassle of heavy gear. It packs small, inflates quickly, and performs exceptionally.”

The boat comes fully equipped for immediate adventure: the T220UL Inflatable Catamaran, high-pressure drop-stitch inflatable floor, drain bung, paddles, inflatable seat, hand pump, valve spanner, safety lines, durable backpack, and two spare patches.

The Takacat T220UL Ultralight will make its official public debut at the Auckland Boat Show, taking place from 5th to 8th March 2026 at Viaduct Events Centre. Visitors are invited to see, touch, and experience this revolutionary ultralight model firsthand. For show details and tickets, visit https://www.auckland-boatshow.com/.

The T220UL is available now through Takacat distributors worldwide. For full specifications, pricing, or to locate a dealer near you, please visit the official Takacat website or reach out to authorised retailers.

About Takacat: Born and engineered in New Zealand, Takacat inflatable catamarans are celebrated worldwide for their exceptional stability, lightweight build, and patented removable tube transom system, delivering versatile, high-performance solutions for tenders, fishing, exploration, and beyond.

Like many in New Zealand’s marine industry, Smuggl Like many in New Zealand’s marine industry, Smuggler Marine is a family-owned business which has evolved and grown alongside the Auckland Boat Show.

Smuggler Marine, as it was rebranded in 2004, started life in 1986 as David Pringle Boatbuilders, mainly building yachts including some of the iconic Ross 930s and Elliot 1050s that are still sailing today.

In 2004 the business moved into powerboats and created its very first Smuggler.

“That’s when we started focusing on the boat show market,” says Pauline Pringle. “Boat shows were the way we made sure everyone knew what a Smuggler was.”

“The Auckland Boat Show is in a great location, high end, people are there to buy boats, and it’s full of opportunity for our business. We love the customers, the variety of people and exhibitors and the end of summer vibe.”
