A high tech tender which is simply brilliant

February 2, 2023 By aowb

OC Tenders’ sailing tenders are back with an updated design, improved performance, and the same convertible concept.

Combining all the functionality of an Offshore Cruising Tender with the fun sailing brings, they’re a tool and a toy all in one. These clever tenders, available in full carbon or standard mode are the perfect intro to sailing for family, friends or the youngest members of your crew, delivering sailing which is as relaxing or thrilling as you choose.

This emissions-free tender option is also light – with models from 58-74kg – and designed to be stable and hardy. Northland’s OC Tenders use high tech materials to build complex, lightweight structures for a cruising tender that’s dry, stable, light and easy to maintain and handle.

OC Tenders‘ sailing tenders come from a pedigree of clever technology. The Northland company was launched by Russell and Karin Carlyon when they realised during a seven year circumnavigation that no one tender on the market contained all the facets they felt were important in a good tender.

Taking Russell’s background as a competitive windsurfer and high performance board builder, they utilised high tech materials to build a complex light weight structure, collaborating with long-term business partner Kevin Trotter from Styrotech CNC.

Together they digitalised Russell’s concept and CNC milled the plugs of the design, creating a cruising tender light enough to be pulled up above the high tide line easily by a cruising couple.

“Cruising tenders should be a dry, stable experience and the tenders we use every day should stand up to the task. For this reason manufacturers of all tenders should take cruiser’s safety seriously. Cruising tenders should have a full rubrail for protection and total flotation. We also believe that maintenance of cruising tenders should be done easily, with materials at hand, in any location on the planet and it should not cost the earth. The maintenance time on your tender should not surpass maintenance time on your main boat. But most of all we know it is possible to have a tender which fulfils most of our cruising needs, not just some. And that is exactly what we aim to do,” says the team at OC Tenders.

Like many in New Zealand’s marine industry, Smuggl Like many in New Zealand’s marine industry, Smuggler Marine is a family-owned business which has evolved and grown alongside the Auckland Boat Show.

Smuggler Marine, as it was rebranded in 2004, started life in 1986 as David Pringle Boatbuilders, mainly building yachts including some of the iconic Ross 930s and Elliot 1050s that are still sailing today.

In 2004 the business moved into powerboats and created its very first Smuggler.

“That’s when we started focusing on the boat show market,” says Pauline Pringle. “Boat shows were the way we made sure everyone knew what a Smuggler was.”

“The Auckland Boat Show is in a great location, high end, people are there to buy boats, and it’s full of opportunity for our business. We love the customers, the variety of people and exhibitors and the end of summer vibe.”
